Tromso, Norway - Winter wonderland

Updated: May 26, 2020

Very friendly dogs

I was lucky enough to have had a chance to visit many amazing destinations in the past but very few were as unforgettable as this one. In January 2017 I have visited Tromso, located in arctic Norway. This was my fourth destination in the country after Oslo, Bergen and Vikersund. The goal of the trip was to see natural phenomena Northern Lights and partake in a dog sledge with mix breed huskies.

Trip started in Dubai where I boarded a flight to Tromso via Oslo airport. After some technical problems with the plane we finally arrived in late afternoon. The moment I stepped out of the plane, I was met by a true winter wonderland. There was heavy snow all day long and by the time I arrived, streets were covered with almost one meter of snow. Despite being tired from the journey I decided to explore the town and grab something to eat. I ended up in local pizza place and this is where I realized, that it will be a very expensive vacation. Prices of food and drinks are insanely high and if you plan to visit this city make sure you plan your budget with this in mind. After dinner it was the time to go for a walk around this snow covered city. After the walk it was time to head back to hotel as I had an early start the next morning.

City centre

Morning have arrived and it was time for a dog sledge with mix breed huskies (can be seen on first picture). I booked both Northern Lights tour and dog sledge with a company Tromso Safari, one of the largest tour operators in the area. Considering very limited time available it made sense to book a tour as opposed to arranging Northern Lights viewing on my own. I was on my way to the local hotel, where a shuttle was waiting to take us to our destination. Ride was about 45 min long and views on the way were beyond amazing. On arrival we were greeted by 145 very friendly dogs, eager to take us on our way.

A journey back to the city

After the meeting with the dogs we were given winter gear such as thermal winter suit, winter boots and gloves. Short instructions on how to control the sledge followed and we were on our way. We formed a column with two people per sledge. One was operating the sledge while second person was sitting on it and every half an hour or so there was a swap followed. Activity was about 5 hours long, after which all participants congregated next to fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate. This is one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.

Dog sledge

Not long after we returned to the city it was time to leave it yet again. This time it we left it in hopes we get to see the Northern Lights. Weather is very important, as this phenomenon is only visible with clear sky in the area with no ground lights. I was lucky, the day I chose was one of the best during that particular season. For this activity very warm clothes are needed as they were not provided like in dog sledge tour. Living in Dubai at the time I did not have many winter clothes available and for that reason I felt extremely cold. I was trying to warm myself by standing next to fireplace. After about an hour or so we spotted first signs of aurora. It was truly stunning. Green lights all over the sky was something I have never seen before. Sadly I could not capture it on my camera as I only had my mobile phone with me. Part of the tour contains instructions from the travel guides on how to take pictures for best possible results with a digital camera. We arrived back to the city in late evening hours.

Next morning it was time to leave this winter wonderland and head back to Dubai. I can say with certainty that this trip was worth of high cost. It was an adventure I will remember for the rest of my life and I hope I manage to return to Tromso one day yet again.

Thank you for reading, hope you enjoyed. Next up is dream destination to many Maldives.
